I'll admit I probably worded it wrongly but basically Coscast heads are much LESS prone to going porous than GM heads.

agrred, annoys me how people rave about them like they are invincible though, and advertise like there car is worth more because of it

I think coscast heads are less prone because there isn't as many as GM ones.

the 20xe's without the c are better. mainly found in astra gte 88-92 i think

Aye the C in C20XE stands for cat. Pretty sure it's a 20XEJ if we want to get pernickety

not necessarily, i guess meeting level 1 on that engine requires use of a cat though, the C is just coincidence. The rest of the codes are

Z = euro 4
Y = euro 3
X = euro 2
C = euro 1

and

G = 8 to 8.5:1
L = 8.5 to 9:1
N = 9 to 9.5:1
S = 9.5 to 10:1
X = 10 to 11.5:1
Y = 11.5+:1


D = diesel
E = multi-point injection
Z = single-point injection
V = carburettor


extra codes

H = high output
R = increase output
T = turbo
V = volume model

also, im guessing some of the later none C engines also had a CAT, but i might be wrong

They started using a C at the beginning because that meant it has a cat so that it meets the emissions regs. No idea why they didn't carry on the lettering consecutively after that though, seeing as now they've decided to use A
