If it has more than 8 seats you need D1.
There are normally other restrictions on insurance etc., Midas training springs to mind.

I need the D1 for insurance reasons, if I want to carry kids then I need to do a Bucks test. I don't want to carry kids but I need to do the D1... has anyone done it?

Similar to any other driver training.
Firstly you'll need the provision entitlement, do a form D2, have your doctor sign it off.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DG_10015999
Put them all on there C1, C, D as there's no harm having prov on the other classes in case you want them later and it'll save another medical.
You'll also need a theory as well as the practical, both of which the instructor will organise.
They'll generally do an assessment drive and book a test. Typically it's around a day and a half's training and some more time hiring the vehicle to do the tests, probably looking around £600.
If that's all you need it for, find a van in category B.

We do a lot of AV and wiring work for other schools so being able to use the minibus is helpful.
