On an X16XE with powerbox, exhaust system from the manifold back (and likely to get little bits of abuse ) really needed? I always thought the bottom ends of these engines were like a chocolate kettle, so is it worth spending that extra £70 or whatever they cost?

id imagine it'll be well worth doing
the bottom end doesnt need to be so strong with the restricted inlet on

I've got them on mine. I thought I might as well upgrade them while mine was in bits as they had to be changed anyway. Not a big deal though really unless your planning what Tom said

Well i've got a 2nd engine on an engine stand that i'm rebuilding so thought if i was going to do it, now would be a good time

If you're rebuilding a engine completely, fit them IMO.

Remember you need to get the caps machined.

Another thought, If you wanted to make it rock solid, Steel rods and ARP's, I know of some for sale if your interested U2U me.

stock balanced rods should do near 8k rpm which is pretty good tbh, but if went steel rods they tend to be for a floating piston so would need new pistons too.
