My anniversary was pretty good to me even though it had been flooded
If you're going to get one over 100k miles make sure the bushes have been replaced recently.

conrods are the weakest part for standard internals
Wouldn't go over 310ibs/ft on standard.
On standard internals your lookign at 290BHP max really
The 210 BHP model did not have VVT but is recoomended as a slightly stronger engien to the 225. Like for like the 225 is slightly faster than the 210 but only really noticable higher up the rev range
Most of the 1.8t run out of steam around 5500 rpm but a remap sorts that
Also refit the DV in reverse as it operates slightly better. They are fitted in reverse from factory for quieter operation as confirmed by Forge
Also if you relocate your DV to the intake you get slightly better performance

That reverse dv thing is not recommended by forge as i asked them. If you want the dv to make a noise get a cai or a splitr

I thought people reversed them solely to get a bit of a turbo stall chirp? Which would mean it wasn't working better in reality lol I've just left mine alone, although I did buy a split-r and it was pathetic so took it off.

really as when I met them at the motorshow they recommended it
i ran mine for 3 years in that configuration and never had any issues anyway

CAI was good at spooling but the 'achooo' when coming off the throttle got annoying after a while.

I had a split r on the cupra and yea they sound shit. Use the blanking plate and set to full recirc - will basicly be a 007p
R-tec rang forge direct whilst mapping my golf and proved your not meant to reverse them, sound worse reversed anyway imo
007p and a cai sounds well

You can put a gt28 on and keep it below 350bhp on standard internals, as long as you don't drive like a cock everywhere

I had a 1.8T MK3 Ibiza Cupra for 4 years.
Never went wrong and the MPG was better than my 1.8 non-turbo Astra which I currently have. I'd have another.

i've a Skoda Vrs, k03s hybrid with other bits and bobs running 265bhp with 300lbft. Coilpack went once but apart from that has been fine. saying that i've changed most pipes for better ones to avoid any problems. prevention better than cure etc

Mine (golf) was reliable but probably the dullest car I've ever owned, even with remap, air filter and exhaust, and 200bhp.
Never again.

this is probably the worst thread to do this in, but my mates is for sale, hes had it for 2 years now, not missed a beat, except a coil pack 1 month into. couple of tyres and a service.
btw, its for sale, 2k.
does 30mpg if driven normally.
no rocket ship, but comfortable and well equipped.

Later 210's (AMK engine code) had VVT too. Realistically means nothing though as it's only used on idle IIRC. Also there is no difference in strength, they have identical internals.
Earlier lower powered 1.8's had 19mm wrist pins but I think all the later ones and certainly all the K04 equipped ones had 20mm. Doesn't sound much but makes a difference.
To sum up it's a very good engine, it wouldn't have been so widely used across various marques for so long if it wasn't. Rod's have been known to let go on high bhp/torque engines but it's hardly an epidemic and it's still not clear whether it's the torque that's bending them or oil starvation issues. Other than that it's the usual coilpacks, which can be replaced for free now, sensors and boost leaks from ageing pipework.

Should get more than 30mpg in a golf, I would get mid 30's on the motorway (around 80mph) even with the haldex system (heavier and more transmission loses)
