The newer gen 1.9's are all 105bhp and 5 speed afaik.
Get a 2.0.

The 1.9 and 2.0 pd's aren't that different.

the 1.9 are 8v engines.
the 2.0 are 16v.
personal experiences have taught me to stay away from 2.0 tdi if possible, the 1.9 are much more reliable and more torquier.

i just wish i didnt have the bad experiences with the 4 x 2.0 tdi's have had in my life - because theyre quiter and smoother than the 1.9, and generally really nice to drive.
i feel if i get another, and experience stressful times because of them again, im a fool for doing so !
they just haunt me i think lol
granted, they were all high milers (90k+) - but i never buy a car without sufficient history and diesels should last a lot longer than that before going wrong anyway.
this is why im driving a 2002 1.9 gt tdi golf at the moment - trouble free motoring and i have full confidence that it wont piss me off (i hope i dont jinx myself).
£72 full tank, ive done 400 miles and ive still got just less than half a tank left (thats mostly motoreay miles btw).

Buy a decent newer one and it's also trouble free.
Suspension components will be starting to cause trouble on a 2002 golf.
Every car, of any age has faults.

things like roll bar links, bushes, etc are wear and tear items like brake pads.
i would class headgaskets turbos sensors and crankshafts more than just wear and tear items.
