Anyone got any experience with these? Parents are considering one for their next car, looking at the 2.0 and 2.5 litre engines up to about 2003.
Any common problems?
They are all AWD aren't they?

Parents used to only buy Subaru's a few years back - fairly bombproof tbh, but can be costly if they go wrong!
Build quality - well put together but feel's a bit cheap at the same time.
Engines - all good engines, but from what I recall the 2.0 can be a little bit gutless and the 2.5 a bit thirsty! Neither are Turbo iirc are they?
and yes, all AWD

Thanks, I have seen the interiors are a bit cheap looking.
When you say costly to go wrong is it just parts that are expensive? as I always end up fixing their cars
They are going from a diesel cherokee so gutless will be a rocket ship to them

Yeh parts are expensive, I can't remember what it was that went wrong on my parents last one tbh, but I know it cost them the best part of £2k to fix (using a Subaru specialist, not a main dealer) TBH, the car had racked up 165k - they never keep cars for long enough these days to rack that sort of mileage up

Looking at fairly cheap ones at the moment, but can budget is more than that, will see what I can convince them to spend.

Foresters in general around here at least are used as alternative to Landrovers as farmer's vehicles
Legacy's and Legacy Outbacks are good cars too - and have marginally nicer interiors. The post facelift ones are a huge improvement in terms of refinement, toys, build etc, but hold their value pretty well.

My parents cars spend more time on fields and tracks than they do on road so if farmers use them it cant be bad
Think they are after a forester for the better ground clearance than the legacys.

Difference in ground clearance between an Outback and a Forester is minimal if you happen to find an Outback within budget
Like most Jap cars though, they will take a fair bit of abuse and just keep on going!

The legacy outback is within budget, but there isn't many within a 100miles without moon mileage though and it seems to look quite a bit lower than the foresters unless its just the pictures that make it look like that, but they are still an option.
We are going to look at a couple of foresters this weekend.

Doubt anyone cares but they put a deposit down on one, the body isn't the tidiest, mainly from the owner scuffing the car in the garage and dropping stuff on it in the garage
But it has had a recon gearbox (with receipt from scooby clinic), new clutch, new windscreen, recent cambelt, full service history, one owner from new on a 52 plate.
Dad is already eyeing up a set of alloys with tyres as it is on steelies and not got a lot of tread left but doesn't want to lose ground clearance by having a smaller diameter tyre.
Any decent forums for them?
Also the engines look a piece of piss to work on to what some people have made them out to be.
