Not really a member of any other forums, so hoping some of you pro's can help me on this one....
- Workplace Windows domain, approx 30 users.
- All users have their own login name, no password required.
- Mixture of Windows XP / Windows 7
Some of these workstations are computerised factory saw's, running windows XP as their OS. They access CAD information from our server using a simple mapped drive. The problem we're having is loss of network resources overnight, if the machine is left on. We do also have this issue with normal desktop workstations, which is easy to log off, log on and that seems to fix any permissions problems. This isn't ideal for the factory equipment.
It's like the machines are logging off (and losing their domain permissions), without actually logging off. Timeout??

Is it all the computers? Is the switch on a UPS?

The switch isn't on a UPS, but it's only 1 switch serving the whole site. The win7 machines don't seem to be affected.
Is there a command I can run on the workstation to help debug?

Those who log out at the end of the day and log in at the start of the day have no problems. It's only if they leave it logged in overnight, and obviously the factory equipment which is on 24/7.

when you leave run a constant ping to the server and have it log it to a text file.
Then you can find out the time its happening and it can help.

So the network share disconnects? What does it do if you try and reconnect? Can you still browser the share via IP (ie: in the Run prompt, //IP_ADDRESS_OF_SERVER/SHARE_DIRECTORY/)? What MS Server are you running?
There is a timeout that disconnects network shares which might be the route of your problems. From memory you can disable that by running the command - NET CONFIG SERVER /AUTODISCONNECT:-1. Doing a NET CONFIG SERVER will tell you the current timeout.

Dom: Can't navigate to shares manually in that way, gives a permissions error. I'll take a look at your second suggestion and report back...

No, RAS is set only via the registry from what i remember. Have a look at KB297684 and KB138365 (do these on the server, better off using command line if you're wanting to disable it). 'offline synchronization' could also be the cause, just make sure that is disabled; likewise disable any power management on the NICs (servers and workstations).
Edit - You don't happen to run Symantec AV do you? I remember there being any issue with drives disconnecting due to dodgy mapped drive names. (HERE - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932463)

youve not got the network card settings to be turned off by the PC have ya in the power management tab of the properties of the LAN. We sometimes have a similar problem at work when we forget to change the settings on new PC's

That is a good shout as well.
We had a similar issue but that was a 802.1x auth issue hence asking about the switching gear.
Try the powersaving shite int he BIOSD as well
