I bought a 98 1.7d ls 5 door as a work hack and i noticed there is orange residue on the header tank. The tank was mad hot and hissing.

Temp gauge was half way. Heaters work fine. Oil is fine.

Maybe just a knackered coolant cap and the orange residue is it not rust? Maybe it's been ran on water, not coolant or no anti freeze.

Do the caps have a max pressure valve so if it over pressurises it pops?

Does look like rust so probs no coolant, just water. But tightened cap right up and now have a leak from a hose, over pressurised??

Just had it jacked up. Not leaking from hose. Leaking from water pump.

I'd probably have a shaft out and see it moving the engine helps. If you disconnect the gearbox mount it should give you a better view.
