aslong as it doesnt go yellow, it should be fine. what game was it? few of the older models had trouble keeping up with crysis2.
switch it off at the back ( or the wall switch if its a new one), hold the eject button and switch it back on. wait for it to finish cooling down and switch it back off and on again

maybe the red light of death quite easy to fix if its one of the bigger versions not a ps3 slim

read further into it. red is the easy fix. usually just caused by dust and crap build up.

A few months back over winter time, i had on the playstation on for a few hours, along with the heating (radiator was next to tv) and mid game i got a msg in the top corner saying "your system is getting very hot, please cool down immediately" i pulled it out of the tv stand and turned it off for a bit.
Didnt have any red lights or anything but it worked half an hour later and never done it since.
Everyone i told this to has never had a message like that come up before?

look on this and theres a tutorial on youtube its not too hard to follow u will need a heatgun and thermal processor paste but its easy to do takes roughly an hour to do
but miles better than paying for a newen

Leave it for an hour and it will probably work again. Normally the case anyway.

This is the one thing that pisses me off about today's games consoles, because the manufacturers squeeze all the kit into tiny boxes they are prone to overheating despite what modifications they make to the case/cooling system.
It's the exact problem I see all the time with PCs I go out to repair and the customer has one of those USFF type boxes or an Eee PC type of case.

Its rediculous, you shouldnt have to buy a games console these days expecting it to break at some stage. I dont know any ps1's or ps2's that ever broke!

Problem is back in those days what was inside those boxes wasn't as powerful/generated much heat in comparison to today's consoles.
I know what you mean though, back in the day I used to have an 'original' Xbox and PS1, they were always used and never missed a beat.
I had to recently sort my 360 out because the shitty thermal paste on the CPU/GPU disintegrated into nothing, and now I have to replace the DVD drive as the laser is fucked on it!

Only time mine ever had a problem, it was lying broadside down. I have it on its end 90% of the time and never had a problem.
The heat seems to be able to escape better that way.

 Mines always on its side aswell, has been for the last 2 years

Took mine apart yesterday. Only went as far as the blueray drive and the box next to it and got a ton of dust, dread to think what's under that, although a bit came out after a blow through hard drive.
Keep mine on its side but mainly because of the short length on my hdmi cable
