I've had my Desire nearly 15 months and I don;t generally use the data, normally in a WIFI zone, but work has been a bit slow recently so been picking it up and finding I get no data signal. I've checked network coverage areas and according to the maps my postcode should give me excellent or at least good signal inside and out (enough to browse the internet, not even load pics) depending on which network it is on at the time.
I dont get it? If I set it to GSM only, tt will have 4 bars at the top and G, with the data arrows lighting up but wont actually load anything, if I set is to GSM/WCDMA it will only give me 3 bars and usually wont show G, even if it does show G it still doesnt load anything?
Dont understand what I am doing wrong here, any mobile/network nerds help me with this?
Cheers

I had the same with my Desire on Orange. Full signal but no 3G, or I'd get 3G+ for a few seconds then it would disappear

You'll need either data roaming, or depending on firmware own country data roaming switched on for it to work when it's connected to the tmobile or orange network (whoever the one you aren't with is).

John, here are my settings:
Data Roaming - Enabled
Data Roaming Sound - Enabled
Access Point Names (once expanded) - Orange Internet
Network Mode - GSM/WCDMA Auto
Network Operators - Selects automatically, currently displaying Orange
Enable always-on mobile d...(rest of title is missing ) - Enabled
As for Firmware, I am rooted but cant remember with which mod, but it's the noob one that does it all for you...struggling to remember the name at the moment
edit - Just booted into HBOOT and it is Clockwork Mod

They settings looks correct.
If it's never worked with that ROM then it could be the problem, if it has I'd say it's something else but I don't know what.

John - it does work in the middle of town, and works at work but is very intermittent, but the signal coverage is the same as the middle of town...
Toby - no idea, I've heard about Radio upgrades but not really sure what to do with it all, I am a technically minded person but I didn't do a 'Nandroid' (I think?) backup when I did clockworkmod, so nearly shit myself when the screen went black
Will it really make that much difference to be messing around with it? Ideally I would go back to Stock firmware on the newest HTC rom but not really sure how to do that either!

I would flash a custom rom with assoicated radio and ril. Will help imporve battery life and network perofrmance.
Look at the Insertcoin Gingerbread rom on XDA, seems to be popular, i was using it but currently on a sense 3 rom (may go back as its a bit buggy).
Quite simple if you stick with the A2SD version.
Boot into recovery, using power on and down volume.
Go to back up and back up current rom.
Wipe all (dalvik cache/sd ext etc)
Go to advance and format your SD card (if already not done so and try to give yourself atleast 1gb of ext3/4)
Install from SD and choose new rom and flash
Install from SD and flash radio.
Reboot phone and jobs a good un.
If you want to unroot just install one of the stock RUU roms of XDA but i wouldnt.
If you want more info just shout

Insert coin isn't bad but really slow. I had it on for a couple of months but moved to oxygen a couple of days ago. Much quicker.
New radio doesn't always improve things, can have the opposite effect, worth trying though.

What does HTC Sense do? I've never fully understood what it all means

HTC sense is the ui from HTC i.e. the 7 home screens, the widgets and the app integration i.e. facebook and twitter with contacts, calender etc. You use different 'launchers' (google go launcher and launcher pro to get an idea) with non sense roms. They are quicker than sense roms as they dont have Rosie (the sense 'launcher') running all the time eating power and battery.

what network are you actually with? if orange, and it's connected to t-mobile then you won't be able to access the internet, same goes the other way round also.

You couldn't right at the start but you've been able to for months now.
You probably don't have data roaming on, so incorrect.
