Yeah you'll get stung. Everytime I've bought something from the US it has worked out slightly cheaper still but nowhere near as cheap as if I'd got it for the list price.

import tax and was around 25% when vat was 17.5 but you cam claim the tax back you would have paid in that country unfortunatly tax in America is usually from 6-8% depending on the state so your going to be hit quote hard

Car parts carry a Duty charge of 4.5%.
Vat is 20%.
So you'll pay roughly 24.5% of the combined shipping and item cost.
50 pound item + 50 pound shipping + VAT/DUTY = £124.50
Admin fee with fedex atleast is quite low so n ot worth worrying about/

This only increases the tax free limit to around £36. Anything more and it doesn't matter if its a gift or not you will get stung.
Generally two ways to try and avoid paying taxes
1) Mark it as under value - but if it gets lost you will only get back that value not the real value.
2) Mark it as a warranty replacement.
Obviously both these are the sort of things that they look out for, specially with bulky items.

Last week i bought £233 of clothes from ae.com. Postage was $50 and the customs fee was £21 as a rough guide for you... still worked out way cheaper for me!

Be cheaper flying across and bringing it back yourself.
