I know a few on here have the Mini Cooper S's now, I'm 99% sure I'm going to get one, being as its going to be a daily runner what are they like to live with? currently using a corsa gsi as a daily drive, too and from work etc whilst the bmw sits and rots on my drive!

What differences engine wise are there with the cooper s and works? i will be doing a pulley upgrade, intercooler and most likely exhaust and filter just for good measure, from what OJC said its not worth getting the works.

What common problems are there? i know rich had issues with steering rack? is this common? OJC mentioned bushes etc, usual bits.

and finally whats the best forum for them for info?

thanks!!

Get on minitorque.com yeah the steering rack seems to be quite common
I don't see the point in getting the works if your doing the upgrades anyway.
As for living with it daily, mines is quite thirsty I do have a heavy right foot though. What colour you getting?

It's not the rack is it. Thought it was the pump...

We sell them btw, much cheaper than the dealer and they are genuine ZF pumps too.

I can't say I've spotted a common replacement part requirement yet!

You need a boot? If so, dont bother!

Pumps and racks - pumps leak fluid all round the reservoir in the engine bay as a give away. The racks - bearings start to seize (creaking noise gives that away) and the whole rack has to be replaced.

With the mods you plan, a Works isn't necessary. Make sure you only bother to fit a Dave F airbox and miltek - all the others are tommy tank!

I'll be at Trax on Sunday, so may try and catch you there for a chat if you want?!

Yeah but your upgrading the works upgrades like pulley and airbox etc. Just save money.
As said get a Dave.f the suprcharger whines a lot louder, also car seems to pull ever so slightly better.

Missus bought one a couple of months ago and only problem to date happened today the clamp which holds the passenger side exhaust silencer up is all corroded so a new one from Mini for £34 is needed, no biggy. Great fun little car to drive, I used it for work which is London driving and got 35mpg comfortably, 40mpg on the motorway. When you boot it it's a different story but still much better than what I'm used too with my car! They handle great (even if she has got runflats!) and they do go really well, just strange having to work the car whereas I am used to the turbo pull from anything about 3k revs.

So its not like with the R56 then where if you get a Cooper S you can remap it to JCW power (210ish). But if you get a JCW you can remap it to 260-270.

Nope. Think R53 JCW only remap to an extra 10-15bhp max.

yeah spot on rich! we have a stand in the pits, pop over when you get a min.

cheers for the other info in here aswell!

lastly, like the look of the aero kit, this an expensive job to buy and fit? seen a black one with the kit already fitted and its up for good money.

From what I gather a remap is only advisable after more serious engine work to see a bigger difference. Aero kits are quite expensive, I prefer the standard rear though. Straight swap I think though as far as fitting.

just tested 2 coopers, one had a very creaky noise when going lock to lock so i assumed a dodgy rack.

Yup, exactly that. Bearings eventually seize up and a new rack is required. Best part of £400 + labour iirc.

Is rack the main problem with these?

Might be going look at one next week, janspeed manifold, decat, filter supposedly 223bhp on a JCW?!

Pretty much, along with PAS reservoirs leaking etc.

223bhp with those mods seems a bit optimistic imo.Especially without an uprated intercooler.
