I'm currently on the look out for a new car, but I seriously can't make my mind up what to get. I've managed to whittle it down to a handful of cars (not the exact cars below), which are all very different What should I go for, considering I don't want to be paying out shedloads on maitenance, and i'm leaning towards a half decent MPG rather than full blown gimp economy

Alfa 159 TI (not fussed over fuel type):
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201141420522056/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/8000/model/159/make/alfa_romeo/page/8/postcode/ch459lb/radius/1500/quicksearch/true?logcode=p

E60 5 Series either a 520/525d M Sport with moon miles, such as:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201140419161120/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/6000/price-to/8000/model/5_series/make/bmw/radius/1500/postcode/ch459lb/page/6/keywords/m_sport?logcode=p

Or as above but 520/525i M Sport with less miles, such as:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201139418888788/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/6000/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/fuel-type/petrol/price-to/8000/model/5_series/make/bmw/page/1/keywords/m_sport/postcode/ch459lb/radius/1500?logcode=p

Audi A4 S-line (preferably with red leathers) can pick up petrol's like this quite cheap:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201139418185243/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/8000/price-from/6000/model/a4/make/audi/keywords/s_line/radius/1500/page/1/postcode/ch459lb?logcode=p

A MK5 golf GTI (possibly with some edition 30 bits):
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3217232.htm

A VW Eos (bit girly?):
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201141420736643/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/8000/price-from/6000/model/eos/make/volkswagen/radius/1500/page/1/postcode/ch459lb?logcode=p

Some kind of 6 pot E46 coupe (would love a vert but not in winter) M Sport such as one of these:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3319115.htm
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201140419408504/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/8000/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/price-from/6000/model/3_series/make/bmw/radius/1500/keywords/convertible/page/15/postcode/ch459lb?logcode=p

I have had my heart set on a 5 series as I've wanted a bit of comfort but I don't know if I'm going to get a good enough one in budget (of around 8k max) and replacing stuff worries me (same with the alfa) specifically with a 5 more than a 3 series.

Too big, and too expensive, plus will depreciate very quickly.

I'd love the alfa, the side profile of those TI's with the big wheels look brilliant and the interior's nice too if a little quirky. The thing that puts me off is the fact i'd be buying the cheapest around which is never good, and how expensive parts are.

Not too bothered about RWD, still love the look of a nice e46 coupe....

cars breaking is uncommon really, you won't get anything if you always looking at what it will cost if it breaks.

find something you like and take the leap imo

Whats the long term plan for car? just a car that you will drive and maybe replace in 3-5yrs time? Or do you want a project type car you keep for years and years

Good advice, I'm having to talk myself into taking some finance which goes against what I have taught myself since I was younger and stupier, but I am possibly going to have children in the not too distant future and I do need to take the leap and get something I like while I can!

The long term plan is the former, I want something I like that I will keep for 2-3 years and that will still have some residual value when the time comes. I put about 12k miles on a year so I'd like something with <70k miles which is another consideration.

I think i'm swaying towards an E46 facelift coupe or a golf gti.

yeah i got my beetle after loads of people said they were unreliable as a daily. i ran mine for two years and it never broke down or missed a beat. and with the new owner its still perfect.
people complain more than they compliment so it always sounds worse.
take the leap and get the alfa

Yeah if you get unlucky you get unlucky, regardless of what car you get or what it costs.

Cross the bridge if and when you get there

if your looking at the a4, get something special like the DTM version

from a sensible point of view an alfa will break and let you down frequently, audi and bmw are far to big to hold their value in bankrupt brittain so you are going to suffer some serious depreciation,
vw golfs will run forever, are desirable as they have a massive following and hold their value like no other car, only smart option in my honest opinion
