Never actually bid on anything on eBay before.

If I was prepared to pay £1,850 for something, and the starting bid price was £1,600 does this mean if I place my bid of £1,850 it works simply as a 'maximum'? Therefore if no one else bid I would actually only pay the £1,600? I guess that makes sense otherwise you're forever adding little amounts to get above the previous bidder.

Just want to be sure as it's obviously a fair amount of money

yeah, it will stay at 1600 til someone tries to outbid you, then it will bid for you up to your maximum bid of 1850 if people keep on bidding against you

Yea, if someone else bids 1700 for example, then that will be your current bid.

i always bid just a bit over a certain amount, say £1602.59, then if someone is only willing to pay £1600 and they bid £1601 then im still winning

Yeah good point and I did that...

I bid £1,864.90 in the end, and there was another bidder that went for £1,850!

So lucky I did that. Now I have another French car, oh bloody hell.
