I have a shitty transit connect which is just tatty and not nice to be in.
I don't actually need it for work or anything like that, but it's just handy to have to haul random stuff in.
I'm thinking Astra Van? What other would you guys suggest?

Requirements:

  • £2500-5000 depending on condition
  • economical
  • medium sized
  • comfortable
  • decent looking
  • reliable

I'm not interested in silly engines, tbh.
It's going to be a van, nothing more.

VW Caddy is a good shout.

id say a combo, but i agree they do struggle abit if its got something in the back. if you can get hold of a 1.7cdti they would be better

At work we have

Pug 207 (Small)
Caddy (Med)
Transporter (Large)
Sprinter (X Large)

Caddy is decent quality and drive quite well, be similar size to the connect, probably slightly bigger load area!

Can be picked up fairy cheap last lot we sold went for £1800 - £2500 due to high mileage but had FSH and kept immaculate inside and out!

I have a Connect and can't really fault it. If I'm honest it's a bit thirsty but that's about it.

Mines an LX though so got CD, electric windows/mirrors, air con, heated screen and full factory bulkhead so it's nice and quiet. If I'm just nipping out somewhere I often find myself taking it instead of my S3. Mines an 04 that had 80k when I bought it and it hasn't put a foot wrong yet.

My dad has a Fiat Doblo 1.9 JTD 53 plate done 180k runs fine, only had one service since we got it in 2005 on 90k

Caddy if you're happy with high mileage for that price bracket - make sure it's a TDi and not an SDi too!

Or get a better Connect - LX rather than L

We have a few combo 1.7cdti's at work, bloody quick for what they are, a damn sight quicker than the 1.7cdti astra's we have and the combo's usually contain half of B&Q in the back.

Does it use oil at all?

Saying that our nearly 100k 57 plate caddy has only had 3 services and it still runs sound.

its had an oil change about 4 years ago, the oil filter is right at the bottom of the engine, something must have pierced it because it got a little hole in it, all the oil sprayed out, un be known to us untill the oil light come on, turned it off, walked to a motor factors, new oil and filter. off we went haha

it does use a bit of oil, only top it up every few thousand miles though, the thing is an absolute mess its a 53 reg, my 200k X reg transit shames it
