that wasn't any old exhaust pipe, that was an M&S exhaust pipe, lined with lucious velvety wadding and warmed to 37degrees

When i lived in OZ last year, this E10 is in every garage and it's subsidised (about 8c a litre cheaper) and everyone was using it.

I was driving my boss' v8 ute on it for months, he only ever used this stuff and never had a problem.

i saw people filling porches with it etc and no dramas.

so old carb motors should be fine.

no injectors.

may have to adjust the ignition timing to match, but shouldnt cause any issues

Yes its the fuel pump and injector seals that the alcohol eats at...also no ignition timing changes need to be done as its will have a slightly higher RON rating so will actually be less likely to knock.

"BMW:
All petrol engine BMW models are cleared for the use of E10 petrol regardless of their year of manufacture but the minimum octane required should be observed according to the owner's manual."

On the plus point it might be easier to clean up when you spill 40 litres over your drive

Don't buy into it mate, it's been completely blown out of proportion by that article. Lots of the USA miata owners run on E85 which is 85% ethonal compared to the 10% they want to introduce here and they have no issues at all.

A company called Ricardo are at the forefront of ethanol research and delivered this report on the affects of E15 on test vehicles from 1994-2000 that aren't apparently ethanol compatible. The only concern was air/fuel ratios on older vehicles.

So as long as you don't have Acetal fuel line fittings, gas caps and fuel rails. You will be fine, as those are the only things that showed any problems - minor swelling and mass loss. The metals discolouration is no problem at all.
