Just to bring this back up,

I have been looking at 95-99 A4s, the 1.9TDi version, but I need to be able to do a bit of towing with it, so is 90bhp (150lb/ft) going to be enough for a 1300kg car towing a 1000kg car?

It's not enough to move itself, let alone another 1000kg... I had one, was shiiiiiit. U'd be better of with 2.5tdi imho Or get an Old E34 524 diesel

Tuning box on the Audi will up the power and torque enough to pull a trailer with ease.

The 2.5 tdi engine in the a4 has some costly, common failings. It's also very thirsty. The pick of the bunch is the 130 PD 1.9, but I'm not sure if it was available in 1995...I think it came later.

This is rubbish.

It's only 90bhp so it's not going to be amazing, it would pull the trailer fine though, if not a bit sluggish.
