Ive had my derv for about 3 weeks now and i get better mpg doing 30 in 3rd, 40 in 4th, 50 in 5th, 60+ in 6th. If im in 6th doing 50 or 4th doing 30 the engine feels like its doing more work and the mpg average struggles to increase and the revs are under 2k at that point.
2k and above the engine feels fine and doesnt sound shitty.

No he wasnt. Missing gears is good for fuel economy. Its called block changing and is something all truck driver are encouraged to do.

Maybe it's to do with when the turbo starts to kick in or something. Mike's car makes 300lb/ft from a 1.6 so that might not help much

I was also taught this, but in the opposite way. My dad was a lorry driver so obviously uses gears to slow down.
But what would you rather wear out quicker, a clutch or a set of brake pads?
Hence I usually use my brakes to slow down rather than engine braking, although engine braking in a diesel is diff from a petrol.
And back to gear and mpg, I just drive in a gear that the engine isnt struggling. Usually 30mph in 3rd unless a cruise where il be in 4th and then 60mph is usually cruising in 6th, maybe even cruise at 50mph but if I want any power its shit

trucks have lots more gears, does it really benefits 5/6 speed cars?

I change gear until I reach the appropriate speed, if I put as much effort into driving as you guys do I think I'd shoot myself.
And god forbid when you get a car that's 2 litre or more, you'll cry.

Who changes down a gear for bends?
Say you are in 4th doin 30, come to a bend that you could take in 4th
Do you drop a gear but carry on doing 30?
