As title says been looking at these recently as insurance is quite cheap for me on one.
What to look for on them? Any common problems? What they like as just a normal everyday car?
Cheers

EGR Valve, radiator splitting where the plastic meets the metal of the rad itself. Other than that I can't think of any more, I had one for nearly 2 years and it's was a great car!
Only got rid to get an Astra GSi, which was a mistake....

Brake pipes tend to corrode rather well.

Broken springs, they tend to use a fair bit of oil.

The only problem i had (mine was a 53 Twinport version) was the oil sensor above the exhaust manifold. It leaked onto the manifold and i had a small fire one lunchtime (nothing too major) but make sure its had the recall on that part (otherwise its, well was at the time, a £53 charge to fix).

Had two MK4's and now have a MK4 van and they have all been faultless really nice to drive too with the electronic throttles and well laid out internals.
A few simple mods too can make them look really nice too.

Also had 2 Mk4's (1.4 16v and 2.2 16v SRi).
Both of them were good cars as a whole. Great/easy to drive, great to use daily, not much common faults to look out for. Felt pretty well built too. Both mine were lowered, the SRi had 18" VXR reps and lowering springs on standard shocks and the ride comfort was fantastic.
Was actually looking for another before i got the Polo and would deffo have another in the future. Either a 1.8 SRi or a 1.8 Coupe.

I've got a 1.8 Coupe, lovely cars, feel very grown up. But the 1.6 Astra is still good for what it is, best bit is there are so many around parts are cheap
