Hi Guys,

What's the consequences of driving without road tax? Just an £80 fine?

Also, how many days grace do you get once it runs out? Not 100% on that, if at all.

Cheers

Depends really on the officer that stops you.

Few years ago I had a car impounded with a £200 fine to get the car back out, that fine went up £30 a day and car would be crushed after 7 days if not collected

its on here about the 5 days
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10036328

theres 2 offences, failure to tax and failure to display. you get away with not displaying the disc for 5 days but it still needs to be on the database as taxed

The weeks grace is no longer in play. It's now a myth, it only lived on before online purchasing. Ie.. "It's in the post"

the 5 days grace isn't a myth if you've paid online though, as you're still waiting for it to be posted out to you.

i chased up a tax disc once after ordering it online, and they said I cannot use the vehicle until the disc arrives and I face a fine/car being taken away if Im caught driving it on the road. Even though I had paid for it online

I spoke to DVLA anyway. No grace for being on the road, but you get 14days untaxed to keep off the road before you need to SORN it.

Yeah, and I bet if you taxed it a month later they'd still back date it anyway, big joke!

I forgot to put a tax disc in my car once. It sat in a drawer. Didnt have any bother,(had paid for the tax though). IMO the paper disc is a bit redundant these days with it all being in a central, easily accessable database.

Well yeah, goes without saying since your car won't have been flagged up on the ANPR. However, had you been pulled over for one reason or another you would've had the old 'non display' thrown at you.
