If you want reliable, pay £300 and scrap if it isn't perfect.
I despair of people paying more for similar cars just because it feels better to pay more.

Not to me, it's going to get lashed around a track.
Well, it will be used on some track days but also for the odd commute, shopping trip etc.

No reason why it can't be cheap and no worse than something priced higher.
The guy choosing to value at a grand has no more idea of whether the box is about to shit its pants or the cam belt is about to let go than the guy who's waxed it to a mirror finish.
Plus if its a Ford you can buy engines for the cost of a tank of fuel. I've got four 1.7s, can hardly give them away. Wouldn't know where to get a 172 engine for that money.

Thing is, you could pay more and it'll still break. That is my point. You've no guarantees something won't fall off.

Ian has a point, Clio parts can be rather expensive.
Gearbox's usually £2-300
Engines around £400 ish
Mates breaking one if u want parts

I wouldn't even change a cambelt in my Puma, engine is cheaper than a set of gaskets and belts to buy and its worth £40 in scrap alu when it's finished with.

Rover 200 BRM, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1999-ROVER-200-BRM-GREEN-/280841940737?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item41637bef01
Strip the interior, sell it on Ebay, along with the trim. Fit some nice bucket seats, and suspension. With the money you get from the interior. LSD as standard, and about 140 bhp.
