Are there any ways of targeting people from specific areas (like for example the West Midlands) and getting them to go on my FB and Twitter profiles?
This is for my company BTW not my personal profile
I was thinking maybe running a few competitions, having some guest bloggers on the website, that sort of thing. Trouble is, I don't want to target the whole planet when I only want people from around here or even just from the UK to be honest.

Be careful running any competitions with any association with facebook including getting people to 'like' or 'join' groups/pages as you're meant to get permission from them to do so.

We ran a couple of competitions for Likes, once over a certain amount of Likes we would pick someone at random to send them a free gift. Worked nicely just make sure you set a sensible milestone, i.e if you have 300 then aim for 500.

You can target specific people in the advertising options if you have a budget for that.

Guitar shop on FB was running a competition and I noticed that the date for the draw kept changing and no winners were announced.
I pointed this out and they selected a winner.

Will - how did you advertise the competition, was it on your website I presume?
Ian - interesting to know, might have to look into this a bit more.

You must not use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry mechanism. For example, the act of liking a Page or checking in to a Place cannot automatically register or enter a promotion participant.

I added a few thousand people then told them to like my page. Didn't work at all now I have a facebook with 2000+ people on it and the page with around 10.
So I can say, don't do this.

How about if I set up a newsletter in MailChimp for example on the website/on FB, and then if I had a competition on the website to win <whatever> I could say to them sign up to the newsletter to receive the latest news/offers etc. and like us on FB to follow our latest posts and that, would that work?
I don't ever really enter competitions so I'm not sure the best ways of running them

Probably get away with it with a small page / promotion. Just something to be aware of
