I have a c20let with an F18 box fitted(did have an f20 and made the same noise as this one)
The box engages gear and selects drive but not fully, it makes a horrible clunky grindy noise but also when I put in/let the clutch pedal out it makes a horrible clunk noise.
The clutch/flywheel all looked fine before fitting the engine. Its a flat type flywheel with what I presume to be the correct clutch(as it came with the box/engine etc)
how many splines should be on an XE clutch?
Im properly scratching my head at the minute!! So close to being done and on the road yet so far!! The box will be coming off again somepoint during the week when I get a chance

can someone confirm how many splines the clutch plate should have? I have a feeling it could be a LET clutch plate which would have different splines to the f20 box?

F20 gearbox will fit a let clutch set up. How does the clutch release bearing look? Condition wise?

release bearing is fine, and spins as it should.
I thought the c20let clutch has different number of splines to the c20xe clutch?
think the f28 has 14 spline on the input shaft and the f20/f18 have 28 spline?

Hmm ... I might be wrong then. People might run the XE clutch setup to run the F20, let me just check.

If you got the box on then it will be lined up, you say your using a flat flywheel? Then you need a full flat fly xe clutch with f18 box

I'd go back to the f20 as F18's are shite, I used a lightened XE flywheel(Flat type) on my LET with a ap racing clutch and xe flat type pressure plate and had no problems at all covered over 1000 miles so far and im running a F20
My flywheel

My clutch

Cheers Crana, looking at your picture there It looks like yours is the correct 24 spline, Im pretty sure mine is 14 spline which would fit an f28 but not the current box I have
Will price up a new clutch tomorrow

I take it the gearbox wasn't attached when you got the engine etc??
I would get a new clutch kit, and use the F20.

was seperate mate but that was only so it could be dropped off to me easier.
The lad I got it off had it fitted with the current clutch and f20 box fitted, although he never had it running etc

He would have encountered the same problem then if he did get it running.
Deffo stick with the F20 now.

If yours has a let friction plate fitted now you would not get the gearbox on mate

It has a flat flywheel and must have a flat type friction plate but with a 14 spline let clutch.

You should really get a good clutch because the let will kill it in no time and use the f20 there much better. Also sounds like you have a small block friction plate?

Pretty sure its a flat flywheel with a let clutch and flat flywheel cover.
You got a link to any decent clutches mate?
Most ebay ones are them red painted ones which are apparently standard just painted red

Got home from work and got straight to it!!
45 Mins later the box was out and the car is looking very sorry for itself once again
The clutch is definately at fault, the splines are completely different. Pissed off I didnt even check this, but glad it will be fixed with a new clutch.

And here it is on the input shaft on the box, No wonder it sounded so rough

Any idea what this pressure plate is? XE or LET? I have a XE Flat flywheel on the engine
