well basically its an x14xe, the car broke down, it started idling, engine management light came on, car keeps cutting out and misfiring badly, when slowing down it would cut out and have to rev it loads to start it, what would be causing this? head gasket failure? coil pack? something else?

On my 2.0 8v it was the MAF! Plug it into a fault reader

It could be the idle air control valve.

Read this and it will show you how to read the fault codes, via your engine light.
