My dad currently has a 56 reg Octavia 1.6 but isn't happy with it, and an E46 316 (1.8 16v) SE Touring has come up locally. '04 reg, one owner, 64k, full BMW service history, nice and tidy etc. A chap from work (who owns a V reg 318 touring) is saying the engine is underpowered, so just wondered if anyone here had any experiences. I know the E46 is popular but normally it's a bit more ///M

Uhm I would have thought it will be a 4 pot engine and thus the comment on under powered is probably correct.

Has to be a straight six and if he wants economy loads of diesel tourings around.

He rarely does more than 5 miles at a time so diesel isn't really necessary. He's trying to arrange to see it tomorrow so hopefully get an idea on what the power's like.

Edit - doesn't even have to be a touring, this one just happened to come up

They really are quite slow, my stepdad had a 1.8 and it seemed gutless when trying to overtake. His wasn't a touring though.

Is it? :S got cruise, ac, cd changer etc. Doesn't bother me too much as I'll probably be in it 5 times in a year

Just been told he's seeing it at 9am tomorrow

There's only actually 10kg in it between the 3 series and the skoda, both with the same bhp

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/bmw/3-series/touring-1999/22667/

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/skoda/octavia/hatchback-2004/28232/ Can't remember the spec level, but performance will be the same anyway.

I did tell him what you've all said but he's going for it anyway. Took it for a drive and said it's much nicer than the Skoda. I think at the end of the day he doesn't like the Skoda and fell for this straight away, so that was it

Anyway, you may say it's underpowered, but the figures say it's virtually identical to his current car so probably won't notice much difference.

Also, it's at a dealer and from what I gather he's paying full price
