I always ask sellers to do this on expensive, collection items, mobile phones etc. Less money goes to eBay the better.

So by avoiding fees i'm saving myself £40 in total. Split 50/50 with the buyer.

I cant see why you need to give him anything. If i bought that of ebay it would have cost me the £510, nothing else.
If he thinks doing it outside of ebay is doing you a favour, tell him to GTF. He should get no £ back at all :s

I've bought large items on eBay before.
I tell them I'm bringing cash so they can just delete the auction. Essentially the auction is redundant and ends up being just advertising. Saves them the listing fee and all that.

If you wanted to sell your bike and not pay any fees for anything you should have just listed it on Gumtree or in your local paper.
Whilst I'm not defending eBay's fee prices, you both have technically entered into a legal contract to buy and sell on there, and have agreed to any fees payable.
You can't just expect to use a service like that and not pay anything for the privilege. eBay are a business at the end of the day, they aren't a charity and they certainly don't need to be doing you any favours.
Flame me all you like, but I don't agree with people that do stuff like this. I imagine because of things like this going on is part of the reason why they increase their seller fees etc.

They are a monopoly yes, and I would gladly love to see some fresh competition that people would be happy to sell with.
But until that day comes, we kinda have to lump it I'm afraid if we want to sell things on an online platform that in all fairness reaches the widest audience.

Out of 500 quid, there would be £40(made up figure) fees. Meaning that Ben would actually only get £460.
By cancelling the transaction (which the other party has to agree to) Ben doesn't pay the fees so gets the full £500, he's splitting it with the guy (fair enough) so he gets £480 instead of £460.

TBF the risk is on his part as if anything is wrong with the item he then isn't covered through seller/buyer rules on ebay

I always do it with the expensive items, as soon as the item ends I just give them my number and do it that way, no trace back to eBay, did it with my bike I sold on there a month or so ago now
