Hi I'll try and keep this as short as possible! Basically... got offered big promotion at work, in fact I was head hunted for it. It was doctored towards me and I was told that it was mine. Wasn't allowed to tell my current boss about it, but he found out, and has applied for it as well he's even willing to take a pay cut for it.
Everything's now gone tits up whilst the head honchos go away and figure out a re-structure. However it works out it's now extremely unlikely I'll get any pay increase (was looking at 22%!) and it would be the difference between me being able to afford to move out, which I was beginning to plan in my head... so very pissed off!
Back to the topic in hand... there's a similar role up in Newcastle (I live in Southend) which by reading the job description is right up my street, and in fact it's ever so slightly more money than the promotion! I am thinking about it, but it's over 300 miles away which is a 5 1/2 hour drive, and my family and girlfriend aren't going anywhere. It would basically mean renting somewhere cheap up there and returning to Southend for the weekends. Even with paying rent, I'd still end up on more money, plus it's where that job leads.
Basically wondering if anyone's ever done anything similar? I've never left home before... there's someone I know that is in a situation like this and he's okay, although he is a lot older than me.
Any input appreciated

Unless you make it a permanent relocation it won't work

if your boss takes the job, why dont you apply for promotion/his job?
Some experience under your belt + will look good on your CV.

I joined the RAF 3 and a half years ago. I got posted to RAF Marham in Norfolk which is around 3-4 hours and 220 miles down the main roads.
It is quite hard to move away to begin with, but you meet people who know people and you end up living 2 lives. I used to go home every weekend but now i just can't be arsed with the travel.
Does you GF not fancy moving with you? That would probably be ideal.

Short term id say it will work, but long term id be looking at moving there.
I was born in Bristol, and when i was about 5 my dad got a job up here in Middlesbrough and travelled up monday and came back home friday every week for a good few months. Then we eventually sold the house in Bristol and moved up here....
Few years later my mum and dad split up....
My dad now lives in Ireland, and mum lives in Bristol again
It will make or break you i reckon
