I mean, come on... Seriously HP?

I know they've had the HP Envy for a while, which is basically a MacBook clone, but this is taking it a bit too far.

Surely with Apple's current fight against infringement, this is going to cost them?

It's fucking shite anyway, so not sure why they'd want to copy Apple, even though it was probably the other way round.

What is the patent infringement? Apple came up with the idea of a screen with inbuilt CPU?

They came up with the design for the iMac, the Apple Wireless Keyboard, the Apple Magic Mouse and the Magic Trackpad.

Idiotic naming aside, there's really no denying this is a direct copy of an iMac and all of its accessories.

Have Apple patented any of the iMac/keyboard/pad/mouse designs?

But i remember Ed posting the link to the HP system in another thread and it certainly is remarkably similar (more so than any of the Samsung phones/tables to the Apple equivalents )

Be very surprised if Apple go after HP though as Apple haven't got much to gain, same reason they haven't gone after ZTE for the T-Mobile Vivacity.

Can you patent a specific design?
Edit to say: How something is designed to look, not how it's designed to function.

I actually thought they could sue on the grounds alone that it's an identical product.

Whether they want to go through the trouble is a different matter. I always wondered why they didn't do anything about the Envy laptops and now this comes along.

Bit cheeky on HP's part, to say the least.

Answering my own question, there are design patents so i guess Apple have. Although, (being a bit pedantic) i doubt they could take HP to court over the design being identical, rather it'd be similar.

There's also the Dell Ultrabook looking similar to the MBA's but iirc nothing has been done about that.

You can't patent the way something looks, but you can register the design. For example. Design registration covers the overall look and feel of the outside of a product and doesn't concern how it works. If someone makes a copy of your product then you can sue them, I'd say it's pretty subjective but the HP stuff is remarkably similar.

Then you've always got your automatic copyright too.

afaik they've patented wedge shaped laptops (or tried to) so i wouldn't be surprised if they have patented the iMac design. KB, Mouse and Trackpad will all be fosho

HP will get sued as soon as the idiots go out and buy one thinking they're getting a Mac.

to be fair, even with Samsung loosing, its been a huge success for them.
I think the general public have now been more informed how similar the samsung products are to Apple.

Theres no such thing as bad PR

Do Apple have the patent on minimalistic everything?

It is verging on ridiculous, designs have and will be copied forever.

Agree that Apple might have gone over board on the whole suing thing.

However, I find it more ridiculous that HP would choose to release such blatant copies of other manufacturers designs.

The problem Samsung have is that the general public (ie. not geeks and the largest proportion of people who buy iPhones) still see Android as "them really difficult phones to use" whilst a 3 year old (literally) can use an iPhone.

Once they overcome that it's game over. I'd imagine it's also why iOS looks exactly the same now as it did 5 years ago.

I'm sure he did but hes not the general public I'm referring to. I'm also not saying that's actually the case I'm saying that's their perception.

Likewise with my nephews (3 & 5), neither of them have problems navigated an Android phone.

Ash - By 'general public' do you mean the brain dead?
