What about a nice looking micro or mini ITX case, then you've got the option of doing all sorts of shit like sharing through wifi, itunes, streaming internet radio, RAID backup, etc. You could always go nano-itx which is about the size of a CD (http://www.via.com.tw/en/images/company/events/cebit2004/img_nano-itx_cd.jpg) but they're not as popular and you'd get less grunt for the price, however, they do use Intel Atom or AMD Fusion chips which have a lot of power for their size - I run Windows 7 Pro on one for my media streamer (Acer Revo).

Mini ITX

Take a pick of the case; http://www.scan.co.uk/shop/computer-hardware/all/cases-pc/miniitx-cases

Nano ITX

Hard drive, optical drive and a few cables will cost you a maximum of £100 on top.

Bit pointless backing the cd's up then, but just go buy one of the two systems you linked. Richer Sounds will let you play with them before anyway and offer decent advice

why is it pointless?

he has hundreds of cd's which are stored about the house. this would mean they could be stored out of sight.
