The missus wants to start a little business, almost for fun, doing arts and crafty stuff.
She's been going on about calling herself a name that isn't registered with companies house but if you google it, someone is clearly using it.
Is there any reason why I can't register it anyway for her? Would I run into any legal problems?
:-)

Buy an off the shelf company and apply for a name change, if it isn't already listed it will be yours.

i think the only issues you will have is if it is already regisitered or it is similar to one that is already registered and you are doing a similar thing (may look like your trying to pass yourself off as being the original company).

She'll not need anything registering if she's a sole trader.
Only requirement is company name trading as her name on the docs.

Or if the question is do you want to register and introduce confusion in to the marketplace and probably annoy the guy, no you shouldn't do that.

The thing is if the name she wants someone is already using it then you might not be able to get the domain you want?

I thought that is how you reserve a name? I only trade as myself so I don't know!

Start making some money first before you even consider going down that road. No point causing ass ache for something that'll probably not amount to much. Everyone has grand dreams that usually amount to nothing, but if they do and it's making money then bonus, then consider your options. IMO obviously.

If she's doing it as a lil bit of fun/sideline business, then theirs no point. May as well remain a sole trader.
That tells ya most of what you need from the legal stand point.

Exactly the same for her mate, although not using her name "Canvas art" or something instead.

Why would you got ltd? have to pay to set it up and you would have to submit accounts therefore need to pay an accountant just for a fun business.
Just be sole trader and retrace with the name you want aslong as its not taken by a big company

You don't need to have an accountant. It helps but it is not a requirement for LTD's.
