need a bit of advice, i had a credit card a couple of years ago which i kind of forgot about now i understand im a moron etc, could do without the lectures please if thats possible
now its gone to a debt agency and im paying it back, but it was a £450 limit and theyre claiming £900 off me. i was under the impression that these companies could only come after the balance and not any charges or fees, is this correct or am i liable for the whole amount?

You'll be liable for the full amount. It will be credit card company coming after you (through collectors). Well that's what I think.

is it a fee or is it just interest payments on the £450?

interest i assume, they just tell me what i owe ive not really looked into it yet to find out exactly whats what because if i owe it i'll just pay it. was just hoping there may be a chance i can get away with paying less so its out of the way sooner

That'd be common sense Tom
Lee - It's likely to be made up of the original balance + any interest from your CC company, then the debt agency will have stuck their charge and any interest on top.
Phone them and ask for a break down of the cost.

Eh? Why would they give advice on how to save money?
Do you know if the debt is with the debt agency or the credit card company?
From my understanding, debt agencies buy out debt and then go chasing - so it's not the CC company you deal with rather than the debt agency. Easiest solution phone CAB and ask or have a look (/ask on the forums) on the MSE website.
If you want a break down of the owed amount, which i would recommend you get, then you'll need to phone the debt agency.

thats how i thought it worked, i initially asked for a breakdown of costs and got a bilf from them with an amount on. i doubt they'll have much of a history of my account with the cc company?

Write to them (and keep a copy of your letter along with the date sent), never EVER phone a debt collection agency!
If you have some cash spare you may be able to offer a percentage of the entire balance as full and final settlement - MSE website will expand on this:

how have you not been recieving other letters stating you owe it before it got to a debt agency?
seems very odd that you had nothing and then straight to debt collector.
tried ringing the actual credit card company? I know in my last place of work they were constantly getting debt agency letters saying they owed x amount however they were all scams.
best advice is to ring the actual card company to see whats going on.
