when the car is stopped it goes in and out of gears fine but when the car is moving say in 2nd gear and you try to put it into 1st gear it crunches/grinds going in but never any other time, any body else had this?

Because your not really supposed to put the car in 1st when moving slowly that's what 2nd is for.

at low speeds. Obviously im not going to be doing 30mph and put it into 1st, like coming to lights and changing down into first

Why would you change DOWN into first from second when coming up to lights/roundabout? Thats stupid and prob yours cars way of saying stop it.lol

may be the linkage needs adjusting? or syncro's on there way out? dont use first till you stop.

Gear linkage is a common failure OEM is plastic but I think the replacement part is metal. About £40 for the part. I had issues getting into 1st and 2nd and only got worse. Have a search.

Vauxhall will give you a plastic part, but you can get metal ones on ebay for something like £17 - at least it was about that when I bought one. For the sake of only a cople more pounds it wouldn't hurt to get a bushing replacement kit for the gear linkage as well, so that then it should all be new.
I also put it into first sometimes when slowing to a stop and it's usually alright, sometimes needs a bit of a push but the linkage bushes do need replacing.

Stop with clutch in second gear. Then put it in first before you pull off?
