Where my semi is, theres a bit of land at the end of the row, 4 houses down, Ive not measured it but at a glance Id say it is 25ft wide and Id like to have about the same maybe a tad more back. my drive will only fit mine and her cars on it, I need somewhere to put my van. at the moment its waste land. just enough room to squeeze the van on between the couple of dead trees and piles of rubble thats on it. however, I can only get my van on when the guy on the end isnt in.

He takes a liberty and parks his 3rd car on it, Ive not a problem with that, hes lived there longer than me, in fact I dont live there yet, but its imminent.

Ideally Id like to purchase it, flatten it, put a nice small picket fence round it and a stable gate throw some gravel down and park my van on it. maybe a few plant pots. it will look lovelly compared to whats there now.

Is it possible to ring or write to the council and ask would they part with it, or do they not like people trying to stick flags in any bits they want and trying to get them? If possible then which department?

I tried that once.

I did it by email though. Got one reply back saying my enquiry has been passed on to legal department. that was the last I heard. But in theory should be possible. But won't it be offered to you neighbour first?

I reckon you'll have to write to the council, then apply for B8 planning permission, as "Storage" of a vehicle.

Then your neighbour will be notified, and he'll put up a fight.

That is only assumptions though.

Does it have a dropped kerb already? If so might have the right sort of use on it.

Just fence it off and try to Land Register it after a few years

Being serious best bet it to ring the council and take it from there. Will need to chase them up to get a response as with most councils

Doesnt have a drop kerb, which dept of the council would I need to start with? and if I did get it could I go about adding it onto the deed of the house or will that never happen? Im not too bothered if he puts up a fight, if they are willing to sell and I have the cash its TS lol

I would have thought with councils being so strapped that they would be keen to make some money from a bit of wasteland

Planning & Development would be a good place to start.

Planners won't have a clue other than telling you if you need planning for it.

You will never get it added to the same title as the house either, you would buy the extra piece of land as an extra title.

As for you buying it at all, depends what and where it is.

Council may have retained it as open space. They might think you want to develop the space either with a garage or use it to unlock development behind, in which case the green space would disappear.

Hard to say without seeing it, and what is around it.

Nope.

Where I work it would be either the Valuation team leader or the Asset management dept.

As above, I doubt they would/will sell it to you on the basis of vehicle storage -- if they sell it to you at all. It's probably/possibly ransom orientated anyways, or has an oil pipeline/main sewer under it

There's a big piece of waste land at the back of my mums house, the woman two doors down pulled her fence down and extended the garden, I was asking her about it an she never applied for anything just took it!

You'd be waiting a long time to claim possessory title to it

Most likely owned by the council however it may be that it is still owned by the original developer.
Best be would be to do a search of the index map, find out who owns it and go from there.

Costs us £5.00 and results within 48hrs.
Unsure on the stance to joe public though.

Happens all the time.

Worst they can do it make you put the fence back tbh.

They couldn't agree a price with you even if it wasa million pounds. It HAS to go to auction and be advertised for 14 days minimum. I know this because I've been through it all so don't waste your time .
