Booked to go from 03-09 October for my 30th, staying at the Novotel on Times Sq. Pretty set on things we want to do but need recommendations for:

1) Places to eat including at least one Tasting Menu type restaurant
2) Is it worth booking attractions before we get there or book them there.
3) Off the beaten track attractions.

1) Look here:
http://usatravel.about.com/od/Food-And-Cuisine/ss/USA-Michelin-Restaurants_2.htm
Beware that some may have strict dress codes.

Also, Sushi Samba in Manhattan is one of the best sushi places I've ever been too. Great atmosphere and fantastic food.

2) We didn't book in advance for anything. In the hotel lobby you'll find City Maps and Flyers, all of which have discount coupons on the back. We saved a lot this way.

3) Staten Island Ferry. It's free and takes you right past Lady Liberty.
Don't bother staying on Staten Island, it pretty much sucks.

Forgot to mention Katz's Deli, but I guess that pretty much goes without saying. Everyone should go there when they visit NYC.
Bit pricey for what it is, but fantastic meat none the less.

I recommend going there for lunch.

Glad you recommended a Sushi place, I was looking at Masa but its a little out of my price range at $495 per person + drinks and tips for the tasting menu but it does look incredible.

great hotel (stopped twice now), if possible try and get upgraded to a room with the view of time sq.

I've never booked any attractions before on my trips.

also have a look for the citypass its discounts/free entry in to a number of places we used it last time and it was well worth it (admittedly we did get it free from travel agents so unsure on the cost effectiveness of it).

I stayed there when I was 13/14 with my parents. Its had fairly negative reviews recently because of the on-going building work but we've been assured that all work will be complete by September 01st so should definitely be done by the time we get there. We've booked a Newly renovated king room with Times Sq. view so got that box ticked

My missus birthday is just after we get back so I was thinking Lion King tickets for her birthday whilst we're in NYC.

I'm heading out to the Prudential Centre in Newark on October 4th for NJ Devils vs NY Islanders. I did want to go to MSG to see NY Rangers but they're playing away for most of October. Devils and Islanders is a derby so should be a good game

Coincidentally, just finished my travel blog from there. Couple of posts if you want to have a read of the things I got up to and there's a shit tonne of pics there too.

http://www.luketwomey.com/2013/07/new-york-part-one.html
http://www.luketwomey.com/2013/07/new-york-part-two.html

For the subway, buy an unlimited ride Metrocard for $30, lasts one week.

Citypass isn't worth it, as virtually all of the things on there can be done for free if you go on certain days/times.

My free things list...

*Museum of modern art (Admission is free for all visitors during Free Friday Nights, 40 to 80 p.m)
*Metropolitan museum of art ("Recommended" admission fee of $25 - aka you can be cheap and pay nothing)
*American Museum of Natural History (Also "suggested" admission fee)
*Museum of the City of New York ("suggested" admission)
*Times Square
*Central Park
*Grand Central Terminal
*Brooklyn Bridge
*Chinatown
*Staten Island Ferry (Statue of Liberty)
*St. Patrick's Cathedral
*Intenational Center of Photography
*Bronx Zoo (Wednesdays is suggested donation (free) day)
*9/11 memorial (You need to pre-book this one)
*City Hall
*Federal Hall
*New York Public Library
*Flatiron Building
*Wall Street
*Highline

Paid for but were awesome and worth it...

*Yankees game
*Knicks game at MSG
*Empire State
*Top of the Rock
*Intrepid museum (the aircraft carrier)

Oh, also try booking a place to go see The Federal Reserve too if you're interested. I tried but it's so popular it's really hard to get a place. I left it till too soon before I arrived.

NY is fucking amazing. Went back in January, but damn it was cold. Did most of the main attractions, but couldn't fit everything in!

A lot of walking involved, so invest in some decent walking/hiking boots lol

Oh yeah, try and not get hustled by a group of black dudes trying to get their shitty rap CD off the ground, like I did They see you coming from a mile away.

There are some guys who give out free tickets to be in the audience in The Late Show in Time Square. Never watched it myself, but can't grumble for free and was an experience being in a TV audience.

A lot of the good stuff has been covered off already. I'd recommend eating in the Hells Kitchen area, 5 Napkin Burger is really good.

It's only about £20 and 2 hours on a greyhound to get over to Phillie which is a great city too. You can go run up the Rocky steps and have a pic with the statue.

I went back in April for a sports holiday and I remember you replied in the thread. I've put the link below in case you were looking for more ideas.

I can honestly urge you to consider doing a tour with this company:
http://www.realnewyorktours.com/

Never had such a great tour and really brought the city to life while avoiding the easy to do tourist traps. Save them for your spare time as they are typically expensive and take a while to que up for!
