It's like a tapered pin which "grows" when not compressed so when you whack it in a hole, it ain't coming out without a punch.

I appear to have launched mine out of my gear shifter and somewhere into the depth of my dashboard innards It was holding the reverse lockout cable inside my gear lever and I've worked around it with a wee cable tie for now, but looking to replace the pin.

I found the above image by googling "split pin" but that doesn't seem to bring any results on screwfix and stuff like that. I can only be sure of the length of the pin, I'd have to buy a variety of girths I guess to find the right one.
