The S5 is a good bit of kit. Haven't heard the S1 yet but if it continues with the theme it will be. My dad manages to use his with very few complaints, which means it's very easy to use.

Not much that can rival Sonos for a multi room setup.

I really like the look of the setup. Is it possible to have multiple phones controlling the speakers? If I bought a Play 1 for the kitchen, could either me or my partner use our phones to control it?
Does it stream music straight from a phone (draining battery?) or does it get the music from Spotify? I have a spotify premium account. Just not sure where it gets the source audio from.

Had one in an apartment in Cheltenham.
Was superb. Had a controller that had music preloaded and premium unlimited music etc. Got my Android phone hooked up easy.
Different speakers for living area then bedroom + bathroom. Could swap music, sound levels etc between the two.
Highly recommended.
Speakers in bedroom + bathroom then out the surround sound in living area.

Yes to number 1.
It can get it from spotify, or a local share, or stream straight from phone. Streaming from phone is only a recent addition, it's not the main method.

I think I might have to invest then.
They are currently offering a free bridge with every speaker purchased.
Does anyone have any experience of the speaker quality from the 1 and the 3?

Ahhhh, no free bridge with the sound bar. That's a shame.
Although you are looking well over a grand to get a home cinema setup from Sonos

Wouldn't' be my first choice for a 5.1 setup.

You probably know this already but you can only use the Play:3's as rears in the Sonos 5.1 setup with the Soundbar.

Website keeps mentioning the Play:1's for the 5.1 setup

Ah - not clued up on the Play:1's - they've just come out haven't they?
I'll rephrase: you can't use the Play:5's as rears in conduction with the Playbar.

I'm getting really tempted by the Playbar.
I think I will head to the hifi store this weekend to try a demo out of the unit. I have a couple gadgets to sell which would easily cover the cost of it.
It would mean I don't need to buy proper speakers etc for home hi fi. I live in a flat anyway so can't have banging speakers as it would just piss the neighbours off

Went in and had a play with the Sonos setup. It's pretty awesome. Sadly they had sold out of all their kit apart from a play 5.
I think I am pretty much sold on the Playbar. Then might get a couple play 1's for around the house.
You can use them as alarm clocks as well with the latest iOS update which is handy. Will replace the current setup in the bedroom as well.

Played with my brothers sonus when I was up last week. Worked quite well, liked the way we could queue stuff up on it.
Overall I think it was a very well made product that does what it says. Sounds good and 'just works'
If you can afford it IMO its the best way to go for house audio

I've been looking at Sonos stuff. Really like the play 1, which I still think will go loud enough compared to the play 3.
Get a few in different rooms and it will fill the house with music.
Now is a great time to get at least one of the plays as you get the bridge for free, as others have said.

No DTS support on the Playbar.
Basically you'll get no 5.1 playback from a lot of blu rays and DVD.

Major omission and complete deal breaker for me, considering how expensive a full 5.1 setup is.

I think the majority of my BD's are DTS-MA so that's pretty shocking if true.

I was told in store that it will do Dolby 5.1 but not full HD 5.1, if that makes any sense?

Looks like it supports Dolby Digital. A guy in a hifi shop should know better than to be banding about 'full HD'. If the only 5.1 soundtrack your bluray has is DTS, you don't get 5.1.

The article which Balling linked is referring specifically to DTS.
Films typically are encoded in either Dolby or DTS. Blurays in the HD (lossless) versions of each (Dolby True HD and DTS Master Audio).
If the device "only" does the non-HD dolby, the film will just play the non-HD soundtrack but if you tried to play a DTS movie, you'd get no surround sound at all
That's if I read the post properly, I just skimmed it but it's a huge oversight to not include DTS.
Once upon a time DTS was vastly outnumbered by Dolby, but I reckon it's evening up... at least with the films that I'm buying.

Another point about using sonos for 5.1 I've just though of.
The speakers need power. It's normally easier to hide a thinner speaker cable than it is a power cable.

I picked up a Sonos play 1 today, very impressed by the sound and user experience.
I think I will be saving up for another play 1 and the sound bar over the next few months. Not to use as a surround sound, but to use throughout the house.
