Just watching an american car auction programme and its got me wondering what the longest running engine design is?
The Chev 350 Ci (cubic inch) 5.7 litre engine has been around since roughly the late 50's and is still used today in alot of GM cars (All new Holdens still have a 6.0/6.2/7.0 version, still running pushrods etc)
Do you know of any that have been around longer?

The rolls Royce / Bentley v8 engine even today is still basically the same engine it has been adapted from carbs to injection and turbos etc but still the same crank and block etc

The L series v8 it's called but iirc it first came into production in 59 so not as old as the Chevy but still in production today all the same

A Series got used for ever. As did the Buick lump that powered all bar the very last V8 Rovers.
Ford Crossflow had a good run in various forms.
Coventry Climax had a sodding long run in various guises too.

The Wankel engine has been around for decades, relatively unchanged. Note my intentional avoidance of the term "running" to describe its presence though

If you go with general design the VW flat four aircooled wins.. 1936 - 2006
if you are going on specific design, i come up with Ford Cologne V6 - still in production apparently from 1964
or go aviation and i get Roll Royce Allinson T56 still in production from 1954
Thats all according to Wikipedia after a 10 min search

Although you could argue that they're not all the same, the nsu ones were different to the Citroen ones which were different to the Mazda ones.
You'd have to argue that the longest running design is the Diesel engine if you use Wankel in the argument.

How about aircraft piston engines? The Lycoming O-360 and O-320 were first manufactured in the 50's and were probably based on something from the 30's/40's. They still make and use them today.
