What is the best way to move a numberplate onto a new car, but keep the old car (and get a general plate for it?)

Locally, used to be able to go to DVLA in Bangor and they'd do it. Unsure now?

After googleing I need to fill in V317 form for the transfer, however unsure how to get the current car a generic plate?

Thanks for any help

Just a case of sending the forms off. Takes a bit longer, but should still be down within two or three weeks. They will choose the plate for you, usually (but not always) the original issued plate.
