I just don't see how there can be enough reliable evidence to convict any of these alleged 70's nonces.
Surely it's the alleged victim's word against his, and it all happened years ago?

We had a massive debate about this at work. One of the other blokes said the exact same as you.
Surely there has been some evidence we haven't seen to get all these convictions to stick

If all of the victim's accounts are similar without ever having met each other/heard each other's stories, it shows that he always operated the same way.

It's still all hearsay though, isn't it? how is any of it provable?
The jury are supposed to be convinced 'beyond reasonable doubt' before they can find him guilty aren't they?
