I'll have a round trip commute of 60 miles soon. It's mostly motorway. Trying to decide if I can justify a petrol VXR over a CDTI. If the cost isn't massively different I'll get the VXR.
So... Astra VXR does, according to the book, 43.5 MPG. Petrol is say £1.32 litre.
Astra CDTI does, according to the book, 65.7 MPG. Diesel is say £1.35 litre.
I'm shit at this sort of stuff.
If you can work out what one round trip would cost I can then multiply it by five for a working week.

Worked it out quickly.
You'd be looking at about £8.30 for the vxr and £5.60 for the cdti

I've got a 1.6 petrol 308 and recently had to use Mum's 307 diesel for a week.
My 700 miles usually costs me £100 in the petrol whereas in the diesel i put in £70. Saving of around £1200 a year accounting for leave.

I realise that. I can only go from the book figures. Without actually spending any time driving them. I just wanted a comparison.

Get the CDTi.
I got a petrol turbo and if you drive like miss daisy it can do not far off book quoted figures...
However switch on the aircon, or have to accelerate and that figure disappears.
On the flipside, I drive my sisters 2013 SLK CDi and that thing you can kick its head in with air con on full blast and it doesn't seem to affect MPG much.
If you have a VXR and you cant use the throttle, its kinda pointless!

23mpg from the vxr perhaps. That's miles per gearbox.

It's a commute so I wouldn't be pressing on. It would be nice to have something that would be fun on the weekend.

It is, it's the F40 unit in the Astra GTC VXR - same as in the Vectra VXR and well proven to take decent power and high torque without fuss.
