It's only the child porn images they search for, nothing else, including other criminality.

Tbf the info Google keep on you is unreal.I had location services switched on on my phone and I came across something on my account which showed my daily movements since I've owned the phone. They ist have pinged it every 5 minutes or so. Suffice to say it's been switched off.

It is likely that all attachments will be scanned for known indecent images by use of a hash values and keywords; or possibly by using skin tone analysis which would flag up for manual review.

No idea what sort of hash library google might have. Certainly wouldn't be surprised if they did, but where they got it from and how up to date it is would be interesting.

given that our own government is currently storing meta data on ALL your communications, emails, telephone, sms, web history, this is but a small drop in the ocean.

As agreed, its a good thing they've done, but it is an invasion of privacy.
Whilst they are turning a blind eye to other criminal activities, who's to say they always will.

Its how they make their money. I may well eventually be proven wrong, but at the moment, I still think google are a 'good' company.

Am I the only person that doesn't care?

Unless you're hiding dodgy images, you have nothing to worry about. If you're, then you deserve what you get.

I couldn't give less of a shit if somebody I don't know is monitoring me.

Its the wider principle of the matter. Hence the massive outcry about all the Snowden leaked stuff that's been in the media every day for a year. Although not the only one who doesn't care, there a lot of those who do.

Isn't the business case for GMail for them to scan all your emails so they can sell targeted advertising? There was massive outcry when the product first came out about that but I guess everyone's forgotten now.

The big question is what are they scanning for.

If it genuinely is ONLY for child porn then I am fine with that.

The problem comes when they start scanning for other things.

Its like the facebook altering what posts you can see

So what if they're scanning for other things? How has it affected your life so far?

this is an extreme but it shows the principle.

They scan emails for people commenting against Catholics in ireland, they then collect up a list of these people and sell them to the Protestants who then take action against these people, ridiculing them etc

Nothing illegal in the emails but could have serious side effects.

Its similar to the Facebook thing. it seems like it was a fairly innocent thing to do but done in the wrong way could have serious effects i.e. they start hiding most of the Scotland "No" votes to people and only show a majority of the "Yes" votes. This gives the impression that most of their friends are the "Yes" supporters which may sway your thoughts, what you might find is that actually they are massively in the minority but it just didn't show you.

I agree, i don't really care. I'm not stupid enough to hide anything or conduct any illegal business on email. Not that i do have anything to hide.

Some random person at google might of seen a pic of my penis, but its a nice one so nothing to worry about.

Not caring because you understand the repercussions (I'm mainly in this camp) and not caring because you are too stupid to see why it's an issue are different matters.

It's a control thing also, give them the power to do it when Google and the Gov are "good" is almost "fine" but then a nastier government comes in and we are all fucked.

Couple of steps away from the thought police tbh!

I think that's a very naieve approach. By your own definition, you would therefore be happy for me (someone who you don't know), to listen, record, read your emails, review your internet history and even sell your personal data to 3rd parties

If your not happy with that, then you shouldn't be happy for a large corporation to do the same imo
