Bought a van mounted cherry picker which is currently registered as light goods.
I've seen many cherry pickers registered as plant no not MOT and also guessing can run dual tanks to run on red while off the road.
Anyone know anything about all this?

Will red diesel not leave red dye in the fuel filter so it'll look like it's being run on red diesel even when it's not?

They only dip tank though, filter is after tank?

The ones I have seen run off a PTO on the van's engine, so you would have to run it on road diesel. Also the cherry picker part need to be tested pretty often. Which might more strict than a MOT.

For fuel, I believe if it's all registered correctly you just user red diesel, none of the plant we sell/maintain have seperate fuel tanks for white and red

Looks like it's not possible to be registered as plant and run on the road too? Strange as there are loads of pickers about as plant

Is there a market for this sort of thing, I was only looking at LWB DAF that was parked up locally with a huge cherry picker on it.. It was a rough old bag of shit there was no way it had seen an MOT test centre for a long time! It was stickered up for hire (with operator) too.

As far as I can tell you register it using the V55/5 form first filled out to show as plant.
Fill out a V10 and a cheque for the tax along with a letter explaining why you want to use it on the road.
There doesn't seem to be a load of info online about it so a call to the DVLA should clear things up

They are registered from new as plant . You can also run it on the road on red but am not sure on distances . U should of bought that 1 off me

My mates a farmer, registers all his vans as plant so he can run red diesel etc can only drive within 5 miles of Any of his farm land, but that stretches for miles so reaches his house the pub and the local town. But not sure if that's more down to his farm vehicle insurance or it being plant.

I'd like to see him justify a trip to the pub on red diesel. Surely you can only use the vehicle for work related trips?
