Thinking of selling my car, it's got my plate on. If I can't get the price I want I'll just keep it.
Can I take the plate off and transfer logbook to a new owner at the same time?
I don't want to pay to take it off, for it not to sell and me have to put it back on.
What's easiest way?

I think its done online now; instant transfer and then the logbook back in a few days. Also retention only £80 now

That is awesome news!! £80 for 10 years it used to be £105 quid and then £25/year..
I've got 3 plates at the moment that's going to save me a few quid

Retention was never £105, it was £25 pa but you paid an assignment fee of £80 upfront on top of the yearly retention.
So either retention is now £80, up from £25 or retention is now zero, down from £25.

My point was The first year cost £105 up front.. A lot of people don't realise that

I couldn't quite suss that out either.. If its just £80 flat fee to either transfer it to a car or hold on retention or if its £80+£80 to retain it for £10 years.

If so I'll have to take my previous comment back because if that's the case come September I'm going to get a bill for £160..

Hmmm I've just done some more reading, it does sound like every time you move a plate you now pay £80..
Car -> Car = £80
Car -> Retention = £80
Retention -> Car = £80
Two plus points:
1) once its on retention it can stay there for 10 years.
2) The transfer from retention can now be done online and is 'instant'.
