Problems
The main problems are engine overheating and electrical fires. The cooling can be sorted by fitting a higher capacity radiator, and stainless steel pipes to prevent sludge build up. The electric looms fitted by Reliant were very poor, and not only hardened with age, but had things like the heated rear window and wipers powered through puny 5 amp cable. This is a disaster waiting to happen, and many Scimitars have ended life in a spectacular blaze. The main loom is also difficult to remove without first removing most of the interior. An irksome problem with 5's is door frame flex at high speeds causing a lot of wind noise. This can be reduced to some extent by fitting new door seals and adjusting the frame clamps within the door skins. Some 6's were fitted with a poor choice of suspension settings, but these have largely been cured by replacement of worn parts with aftermarket items. The paintwork on the fibreglass cracks, and ill advised respraying can result in large sections of thicker paint simply falling off. Paint removal is a chore because chemicals cannot be used, and it must be sanded off if a proper repair job is to be done. Body repairs are relatively easy thanks to the figreglass structure, and the availability of repair sections. There can be some chassis rust, mostly on the front outriggers. Chassis repairs can often require body off surgery, but it is rare that they cannot be fixed. The interior can get to look quite rough, and the front seat frames on 5's were not that strong and actually break in some cases. All interior parts are available though, both new / second hand original parts, and fibreglass replicas.
