i thought the phase 1 had the 2.0 redtops only, no 1.8 available
then the phase 2's had the 1.8 & 2.0 ecotecs

you even get phase 1 2.0 8valves....
the phase one ecotecs usually kick out a fair bit more ppower than they should at standard.....
just specs different
2litre ecotec got all the trimmings - earlu one has shit steering rack and no airbag. then u get the ones with airbags and better steering rack.
none of the otheres ones got fogs - unless its phase 2. and the 1.8 has steelies

The only one worthy of a Gsi badge is the 150 bhp red top, the others are just lame.

Yes. There was someone who bought one of the 500 R reg GSi,'s, took the engine straight out and fitted a 2.0litre turbo.
But, agreed, only decent Astra GSi was teh Redtop version. Cracking looking motors

They only made 500 R reg Gsi`s? thats why ive only ever seen one then. The badges are the newer style chrome smaller font, if that makes sense, heh

the 2.0 ecotecs are 136bhp right?
so im guessing about the same in torque. So what mods would get it to 150bhp/150lb torque? I mean all the early Gsi`s will probably need engine rebuild so why not get a later one and tune it?

yeah, only 500 made. All in Red i think.
Ecotec 2.0ltires are 136bhp. Can be tuned to around 240bhp, but so can a 1.6 And you need to spend a grand or so to reach the C20XE figres anyway.
i.e may as well stick in the redtop for the same price and have the power as standard with basis to tune from there.

Yes agreed, if its going to cost a grand just to get to C20XE figures then.

u get p and r reg ones and there come in black, red white and blue (same as all gsis)
ecotec engines are very restricted. takes a bit of effort to get some proper power out of em. c20xes is a gr8 engine that can do loads of miles too!

I used to work with a guy that bought a P reg phase two GSi (2.0 Ecotec), it didn't actually have 'GSi' badges on it, just said at the back 'Vauxhall Astra 2.0 16v', but obviously had the GSi body kit, etc.
Went out in it once with him driving, didn't really seem that quick, and he took it to Courtenay to be tuned as well.
