This however would make a nice project
1980 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GLI CABRIOLET 1600
DIESEL, 1980, 165000 miles, Metallic Blue, original alloy wheels, CD player, due to contaminated engine can be restored, MOT, excellent condition apart from engine, it is in running order. £600 . ono
Wonder what engines go into these

Colin, I know a guy who will shortly have a 1.8 8v engine out of a Scirroco up for grabs. They should fit, the Mk2 and Mk3 engines need modding to fit due to water pipes.

early mk1 Gtis are 1.6 later mk1s were 1.8s with 110bhp. Vr6 engines fit.

Speak to Gambit, he knows loads about Golfs.
AS far as im aware, roofs are not electric. GTi version came with the 1.8 and 2.0 8v units, but dont quote me on the 2.0 bit

in a nut shell....
Karmann took the MKl bodyshell, strengthened it to increase its weight to 136 kg, and created the best convertible money could buy in 1979. Modifications were pretty much as with the hatchback Golf. The GLi had the 1588cc GTI engine and suspension, while the GLS had uprated trim -- but only a 70 bhp, 1457cc engine. In 1982, the 1.8 GTI engine was installed into the GLi, and the GLS got a 1595cc unit. For 1981, the dash was upgraded. Sports seats and a lockable glovebox became part of the specification by 1983. The GTI designation was finally adopted in 1985. In 1988, VW modernised the bodywork with rounded bumpers, integrated front spoiler, rear apron and more prominent wheelarches. Also, a 1.8 carburettor-fed Clipper replaced the old 1.6 GL. For 1990, a power hood was added to the spec. There have been plenty of special editions, from the 'All White' and 'All Black' in 1986. Sportline and Rivage, 1991-92, with BBS and Recaros, are the best.

well if you go buy the mk2 16v weight
then you'll get 0-60 under 7.9s and top speed of about 125mph - they have the aerodynamics of a brick

i reckon top end would be 125 with 0-60 around 7sec cos the mk2 16v werent that quick on top end.

Was seriously thinking about getting a 1.8 one as my next car.
