When we covered this at uni fri were told that 140+ systolic (the higher of the two figures) is borderline for hypertension. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? Your diastolic figure is about normal so could be due to stress or exercise etc. Where do you have it taken?

No the 68 is diastolic pressure, its the pressure in your arteries when the heart is refilling with blood. The 140 is called systolic pressure and its the pressure when the ventricles contract and the blood is forced out of you heart. The so called 'normal' is given as 120 over 80, although as stated this can change with age as arteries harden etc.

Nicely put scott!
These lectures come in quite handy!

Austin- u might wanna get it checked again in about a week. Like slate said 140 systolic is borderline so if u got stress etc its going to be higher than usuall.

You'll live, just take it easy, avoid too much stress and cut down on salty and fatty foods.
