ok i stripped the inlet/exhaust manifold and head off my redtop today so it's sitting on the engine stand before i send it away for an overhaul. it's done 115k but was running ok in the cav gsi.

gonna do the breather mod on the rocker cover, new cam belt and clutch anyway.
what else would you recommend be done balancing, lightened, lsd etc. before it's fitted. any advice welcome.

Whats the budget?

You may as well fit new bearings and pistons rings to it.

Remove the 'wedge' from the butterfly.

Lightening, balancing and an lsd would be recommended, but they come at a cost.

An lsd would make a huge difference m8 as they suffer from bad torque steer, seein as you've not fitted the engine yet the things you can do depend on how much your willing to spend like cams, porting and gas flowing the head and so on.

there's no set budget really but i don't want to go crazy like fitting throttle bodies, lsd is about £500 i think , i need to check the head as it may have been ported by regal already.
theres no hurry either as i'm prepping the corsa to take the engine, maybe spend about £1000-£1500 getting it ready.
is it worthwhile taking the wedge off the butterfly or opting for a larger throttle body from regal?

I would never get a larger throttle body from regal. Take the wedge off for free.

Also take the filters out of the AFM.

Will what you spend now be what you ultimatly want to spend on the engine? Or do you plan on spending more later?

knowing me i'll probably spend more later, but cams and chips can be done with the engine in, it's the fit it while the engines out stuff i'm looking at.

oh yeah the exhaust manifold is cracked so should i weld the stock one back up or upgrade to a performance one (which is best)?

IIRC Manifolds on the XE engines make quite a big difference, might be worth upgrading it. Few hundred £ though...

Whilst its out you may as well rebuild the bottom end. New main and big end bearings, new rings. Whilst its in bits get the bottom end balanced and the flywheel lightened. Might also be a idea to fit new decent clutch if the old one shows any wear.

Things are the sorts of things that will be pain when the engine is in.

If your ever thinking of raising the rev limit past 7250rpm you might as well uprate the big end bolts whilst your in there for some Cossie items.

Rod bolts aint all that hard to change in situ though. Not like taking the flywheel or crank out......

Depends on plans for decent future mods really....
