I am scared, it seriously sounds like some people in this thread are thinking they are real. Either that or its very bland sarcasm that isnt funny.

Mr. Zemic's did say that hoverboards had been around in an interview, but parents groups suppressed the sale of them

Maybe in the same format as hovercraft with inflatable air cushions, not like the ones seen in the film which defy gravity.

Thing is I know how it could be done, but it'd be like skating on a ice rink - but with absolutely minimal friction...

To see what I mean, try to make 2 magnets repel against each other and put em close to each other. They will try to slide sideways.

Same thing would happen. You'd basically hover, but be so unstable you'd just smash straight into things with little control. Using Electro Magnets acting against the earths gravational pull this could be achieved, but maybe only at the poles

They use a similar thing on some high tech trains... Magnetics repel on track + train, so the train in effect hovers slightly, thus less friction and it can achieve a greater speed with better efficency - remove friction and it'd go on for ever, here you only have air friction if you leave a cushion of air between the train and track - sounds a bit risky though - bet they're prone to derailing...

been made in Japan I believe.

oh yeh - the train above also moves by magnetic field... the magnets are set to attract, then at the front and repel at the back... then switch as it moves - so in effect it's like putting a carrot infront of a donkey and walking away as it comes towards you and having someone kicking the donkey up the ass following it.

And yes they had a rail type thing which actually stopped it just drifting off.
