What a wonderfull place to live
POLICE ESCORTS FOR BUSES THROUGH WHITLEY
29/01/2004 READING Borough Council and the police are becoming increasingly anxious about a deterioration in behaviour by gangs of yobs in the already-notorious Whitley Wood area - brought alarmingly into focus this week when buses running through there were assigned uniformed police officers to guard them.
There have been around a dozen attacks on buses in the Whitley area in the past few weeks, including one where a driver had ammonia thrown in his face and another where stones were fired from a catapult at buses.
In other incidents drivers have been threatened with a baseball bat, and bricks and a tin of paint are among other missiles which police fear would end in a disaster if a driver were to be struck and incapacitated while a bus was moving.
This behaviour is increasingly typical of what Whitley yobs are capable of. Recently a smart semi-detached house was trashed by vandals as new owners prepared to move in. In another ludicrous situation the fire station just north of the M4 was put under siege by youths who rained stones at officers and vandalised signage outside.
Add to that the regular vandal attacks on the South Reading Leisure centre in Rabson Recreation Ground, at least one serious arson attack locally, and the continuing disastrous academic performance of the main local senior school, Thamesbridge College, and it is little wonder council officials as well as police, are concerned.
Already the Labour council has tried bizarre "social engineering" tactics to try to ease the Whitley problem by shifting known troublesome families to other parts of Reading. But all that has done is transfer the trouble with it.
Within weeks of Whitley families being moved to Lower Caversham, the Amersham Road estate there became a virtual no-go area - so bad that police had to introduce horse-back patrols at one stage to quell problems.
And when other families were moved out to the west of town, at Purley, it took only a matter of days before a boathouse on the River Thames there was gutted by arsonists.
The council has already held a special meeting to discuss ways of restoring the reputation of Thamesbridge College - which was much more successful in its old days as just plain Ashmead School - and now the whole topic of how to improve life for the many law-abiding families in Whitley is high on the agenda.

No Reading is not a dump, just this small 2 x 2 mile area is where all the pikeys and single parents are dumped.
